London’s hidden speakeasies are tucked behind ordinary façades. On a Sunday, you’ll want to avoid the rush of the main streets. Pick a neighborhood—say Soho or Shoreditch—and trace a walking route that keeps you on side streets. A quick Google Maps search for “speakeasy London” will list the spots, but don’t rely on the map alone; the real charm is in the discovery.
Step 2: Look for the Subtle Clues
Most bars hide behind a nondescript door or a bookcase that slides open. In the corner of a café, a back‑door entrance might be marked by a single brass keyhole. When you spot a door with no sign, pause. Check the surrounding tiles for a faint pattern—often a motif that matches the bar’s interior décor. A quick glance at the window, if any, can reveal a tiny glass of gin or a chalkboard with a single word: “OPEN.”
Step 3: Ask the Locals, Not the Tour Guides
Bar staff usually prefer to keep the place low‑key. Approach the bar’s host, not the tourist desk, and ask for a “Sunday brunch.” The bartender will likely give you a menu with a list of brunch cocktails, such as a mimosas made with elderflower gin. If they hesitate, they’ll tell you the bar is closed that day, which is a polite way of saying it’s not operating. A polite “Thanks, I’ll check back later” is all you need.
Step 4: Sample the Brunch Cocktails and the Food
Most speakeasies serve brunch cocktails that are a twist on classics. The “Brunch Old Fashioned” swaps bourbon for a lightly spiced rum and adds a splash of orange liqueur. Pair it with a toasted avocado toast that has a drizzle of smoked paprika. The menu is usually limited to 8–10 items, so you’ll get a taste of everything without committing to a full meal.
Step 5: Enjoy the Atmosphere Before the Crowd Arrives
Arriving at 10 a.m. means you’ll be the only one in the room when the bar opens at 11 a.m. The quiet hum of a single piano and the scent of fresh coffee will set the tone. It’s a good time to talk to the bartender about the history of the space—many were once speakeasies from the 1920s, now repurposed as brunch spots.
Common Mistake: Over‑Planning the Menu
Some brunch-goers try to order every item on the menu. This not only strains the kitchen but also dilutes the experience. Pick one cocktail and one food item, and you’ll appreciate the craftsmanship behind each.
